2011 Biennial Meeting of Latinmag, Tandil, Argentina

Preface

This special issue of Latinmag Letters contents the contributions presented at the Second Biennial Meeting of the Latin-American Association of Paleomagnetism and Geomagnetism (LATINMAG). The meeting was held at the University Cultural Center of the University of the Center of the Buenos Aires Province, Tandil, Argentina, between 23 and 26 November of 2011.

As the previous Meeting, organized under the same name in 2009 at Isla Margarita, Venezuela, it was devoted mainly to following topics: Paleomagnetism, Geomagnetism, Rock Magnetism, Archeomagnetism, Magnetostratigraphy, Environmental Magnetism, Magnetofabric and Magnetic Prospecting. These Meetings are a great opportunity for updating the last scientific advances, promoting the meeting of colleagues in a pleasant and friendly environment in order to enhance personal and institutional ties and encouraging the active participation of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The contributions come from scientists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Czech Republic, Chile, France, Germany, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Venezuela, Uruguay, USA,

This issue includes the abstracts of four short courses and 13 invited lectures given by prominent colleagues (Leonardo Sagnotti, Edgardo Cañón Tapia, Martin Chadima; Joseph Kirshvink, Monika Korte, Dario Bilardello, Cristina Pomposiello, Julio Gianibelli, Rubén Somoza, Marcia Ernesto, Irene Raposo, Katia Pinheiro, Manuel Calvo, Vincenzo Costanzo, Manoel D’Agrella, Victoria Mejía Bernal, Ana Ma. Soler, Fernando Poblete. Also the expanded abstracts of 85 regular presentations are published here.

The contributions have been organized in four main Sessions.

Session A: Geomagnetism – Geophysic Methods; Session B: Paleomagnetism – Tectonics; Session C: Archeomagnetism, Paleointensity, Paleosecular Variations; Session D: Rock Magnetism – Environmental Magnetism

The contributions cover a quite wide scope of problems, between them: data of magnetic observatories, magnetotelluric studies, magnetometry, gravimetry, paleomagnetic and tectonic studies on Permian, Mesozoic and Cretaceous rocks, paleointensities and paleosecular variations determined by archaeomagnetism, lake sediments studies, volcanic rock studies, etc., rock magnetic studies applied to paleoclimate, paleoenvironmental, pollution, deposit identification, etc.

I am using this opportunity to thank all the authors for contributing to this issue, and the reviewers for their help.
